In addition to nearly everything that has been edited or viewed, your
computer has a trail of websites visited, information that has been
entered into on-line forms, user IDs, and passwords. Multiple copies
of documents edited or simply viewed from a thumb drive can also be lurking. Some people
mistakenly think they rendered their information inaccessible.
In one case, a hard drive retrieved from a friend’s trash can had dates of birth
and social security numbers for the entire family in addition to copies of
statements from several credit cards. It could have been ripe for easy
identity theft. In another instance, an illegally dumped computer was missing
several cables, but the hard drive contained details about the owner and the business
he operated with his brother along with pictures of a partially disrobed woman from
the same camera as family pictures – potential embarrassment as a minimum.
Are you getting rid of an old computer? Many so called cleaner programs do not
erase all of your personal data. Don’t give your life away. Call an expert
to clean your hard drive first. We can insure that you don’t also give away any
personal information.
Copiers are another way to lose control over personal information. Most recent photo copy machines store images of copied documents on
an internal hard drive. Click here for an interesting article. Don’t give away personal information when you sell, turn in a leased machine, or otherwise get rid of a
copier? Call an expert to wipe the hard drive before getting rid of your copier.
